LUBBOCK, Texas - Nicholls State University baseball freshman pitcher
Jacob Mayers has been named as one of just 25 semifinalists for the 2023 Pitcher of the Year, announced Wednesday by the College Baseball Foundation.
Mayers has had a phenomenal rookie season for the Colonels as he ranks among the national leaders in the NCAA in hits allowed per nine innings (4.75/3rd), ERA (1.93/6th) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.05/12th). For the season, the St. Amant product is 8-1 as a starter with 88 strikeouts in only 60.2 innings pitched. Mayers has surrendered just 32 hits for a Southland-best .161 opponent batting average.
A native of Gonzales, Louisiana, Mayers has struck out at least four batters in each of his outings this season and had a career-high 11 in a victory at Louisiana Tech. He's had four starts without allowing an earned run including three without any runs. Mayers has also surrendered two or fewer hits in seven of his 12 starts.
