Colonel Softball claims No. 3 seed in SLC Tournament

THIBODAUX, La. – With a 13-11 record in the Southland Conference, the Nicholls State University softball team earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SLC Tournament, hosted by McNeese in Lake Charles.

Nicholls (27-22) was idle over the weekend and secured a third-place finish following the other teams' results. The Colonels open tournament play against No. 3 Northwestern State on Tuesday, May 9 at 5 p.m.

The Colonels are making their second straight postseason appearance but earned their first bid since 2019. All seven teams made the 2022 edition where Nicholls went 0-2 as the No. 7 seed.

Nicholls is making its 15th appearance all-time in Southland Tournament but it will be the first time that the Red and Gray will be the No. 3 seed. Their first-round opponent, Northwestern State, took two of three games earlier this season in Thibodaux. The Lady Demons won Game 1, 6-5, before clinching the series with a 3-1 win. In the finale, the Colonels won in eight innings, 4-3.

Nicholls is 4-2 all-time against Northwestern State in the tournament, with the last meeting coming in 2019. The No. 2 seed Colonels opened up play with a 9-0 run-rule victory over the No. 6 seed Lady Demons.

McNeese claimed the top seed by winning the regular season title. Southeastern will be the No. 2 seed and the Colonels are followed by Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Northwestern State, and HCU.
