BATON ROUGE, La. – After Southern broke a scoreless tie in the 61
st minute, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team had a chance to even it up with a penalty kick in the final seconds, but the attempt was batted away as the Colonels fell 1-0 Friday night in their nonconference finale.
Nicholls (1-8) went down 1-0 when Taylor Henry booted one past
Megan Cook for the lone goal of the night. But the Colonels were awarded a PK with 37 seconds remaining after Southern (2-4-1) was whistled for a handball in the box.
Jaden Jeter went right with the kick and it was blocked, and the Colonels were unable to get off another shot as the final horn sounded.
The loss was the third straight on the season and also the third consecutive in the series against Southern. Nicholls had won the first 12 matches against the Jaguars, dating back to 2019.
Southern held a 13-8 advantage in shots with the Colonels tallying six on goal.
Shelby Nickal had a team-high three shots while
Lauren Andre added two.
Cook saw all 90 minutes at goalkeeper, totaling a season-high seven saves.
