THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team earned its first Southland Conference victory of the season over New Orleans inside Stopher Gym on Thursday night.
The Colonel offense was clicking on all cylinders as they hit .469 and .424 in the first two sets to take them 25-18 and 25-20, respectively. The offense cooled off in the final set as the unit hit .182 and had to claw from behind to finish the frame 25-23.
The attack was paced effortlessly by setters
Evelyn Trivino Espinosa and
Ava-Claire Calais who registered 25 and 12 assists.
Tierney Terrell led the balanced attack with 16 kills while
Leah Linares Castro and
Jordan Gamble had nine apiece and
Makila Billingsley added eight.
Defensively, the Colonels tallied 47 digs and 14 blocks. Libero
Kenley Nonato finished with 16 digs, followed by
Brightyn Ratcliff (7) and Espinosa (6). In the middle,
Khara Morton led the unit with five blocks while Castro had four, Billingsley and Gamble had two apiece and Espinosa added one.

The Red & Gray (6-8) will play three road matches next week beginning in Lake Charles against McNeese on Tuesday Oct. 8, followed by a trip to Hammond to face Southeastern (Oct. 10). The Colonels wrap up the week at UNO on Saturday (Oct. 12).
