WESTWEGO, La. -- The Nicholls State University women's basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season after picking up a pair of victories over Evansville and Tarleton in the Big Easy Classic on Friday and Saturday
GAME ONE: Nicholls (63) vs Evansville (50)
In the victory over the Purple Aces the Colonels took control of the action midway through the second quarter and never looked back. The Red & Gray scored the final eight points of the first half and led by as much as 17 in the game.
The Colonels played stout defense throughout the contest as they allowed the Aces to make 16 field goals while forcing 17 turnovers. The unit also scored 17 points off the turnovers won the rebound margin nine.
Reigning SLC Player of the Week
Tanita Swift hit six field goals including a pair of twiples to lead the way with 18 points.
Britiya Curtis hit three shots from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. The duo combined for nine boards and had four assists apiece.
Malaya Jones added eight points while
Emani Burks had a game high eight rebounds.
GAME TWO: Nicholls (58) vs Tarleton (51)
In the win over the Texans, the Red & Gray was stout defensively in the first half to build the lead. The Colonels began the game on a 10-2 run and closed the first quarter with a 10-point lead. The momentum carried over as Nicholls led 28-15 at the intermission.
The Colonels shot 45% from the field and made 18 foul shots including 12 in the second half to hold the lead.
Deonna Brister and Swift had 13 points apiece while Jones added 11 off the bench. Both Burks and Curtis shot 4-6 from the field and combined for 17 points.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
For their efforts over the weekend in the Big Easy Classic,
Tanita Swift was named Tournament MVP while
Britiya Curtis was named to the All-Tournament squad.
