Colonels Outlasted by Jaguars in Thriller

MOBILE, Ala. – After taking a 10th inning lead for the second consecutive night, the Nicholls State University baseball team was unable to hang on against the University of South Alabama in an 11-10 loss on Eddie Stanky Field on a windy Wednesday night.

In the extra frame, senior first baseman Edgar Alvarez gave the Colonels the lead with an RBI double before Drake Anderson drew a bases loaded walk to put Nicholls up 10-8. After tying the game in the ninth, USA rallied again and ended the game on a walk off strikeout that allowed a runner to score from third.

Nicholls finished with 11 hits in the loss led by Parker Coddou, Brayden Kuriger, and Alvarez who tallied two hits apiece.

After going down 6-1, the Colonels scored seven consecutive runs from the fifth frame to the ninth. The Red & Gray exploded with half of their hits to plate five runs in the sixth highlighted by a Jayden Kay who hit an RBI double.

While the bullpen kept the Jaguars off the board, Nicholls scored the go-ahead run in the eighth and added one the ninth.

USA's ninth inning rally featured a pair of RBI singles but the Colonels went to the bullpen and forced a bases loaded flyout to keep the action going. Then in the home half of the 10th, the Jaguars capitalized on an error to score the game tying runs. Arturo Rodriguez picked up a strikeout, but the ball bounced away to allow the winning run.

Nicholls used a total of 10 pitchers in the game, allowing 11 hits while striking out seven. The Colonel defense finished with two errors in the loss.
