Four Double Figure Scorers Lift Colonels over Islanders

THIBODAUX, La. – Four double digit scorers led the Nicholls State University women's basketball team over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 70-67 inside Stopher Gym on Thursday night.

Sophomore forward Lexi Alexander scored a game-high 21 points including 10 of the final 11 for Colonels. Despite foul trouble, she hit 7-10 field goals and was a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.

With the game tied at 65 with less than a minute left, Alexander hit a shot in the paint to put the Colonels up by two. After a defensive stop, junior forward Deonna Brister made it a three-point game with a free throw.

Alecia Westbrook scored two of her 18 points with six seconds left, but Alexander pushed it back to a three-point game with two foul shots. On the final play of the game, Jaeda Whitner's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good as Nicholls snapped its seven-game drought in the series.

Brister finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. This is her fifth conference game with double digit points, including three of her last four games.

Colonel guards Britiya Curtis and Mikayla Etienne finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. The duo combined to hit seven shots from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Kyla Hamilton played all 40 minutes and flirted with a triple double as she registered eight points, snagged nine boards, and dished seven dimes.

The game was a back-and-forth battle that saw 10 ties and 12 lead changes. The first half was a hard fought 20 minutes that ended with the Islanders up by two (32-30) at the intermission.

The third quarter began with the teams trading runs. First, the Islanders opened the frame with an 8-0 run to go up 45-35. Then, the Colonels punched back with a 16-4 surge, sparked by two triples from Etienne to close the quarter to hold a 51-49 advantage going into the final stanza.

The Colonels have won their third consecutive conference game for the first time since the 2019-20 season when they finished regular season on a seven-game winning streak.
