THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team scored 37 runs and picked up a pair of victories over Grambling State University on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Saturday.
GAME ONE Nicholls 13, Grambling 2 (8 inn.)
In the first game,
Edgar Alvarez went 3-4 and accounted for seven of the 13 colonel runs. He began by capping off a four run second frame for the Red & Gray with an RBI single up the middle. Alvarez's second hit was a two-run base knock to right field in the sixth inning and his last one was a three-run blast that snuck just inside the first base foul pole to put the game on ice in the eighth.
Basiel Williams got the Colonels scoring started with a two RBI single and later scored via a
Kaden Amundson base hit. In the fifth, second baseman
MaCrae Kendrick hit a two-run home run to left center field and in the following inning, Amundson added his second RBI single to put the Colonels up 7-2. In the seventh,
Garrett Felix used his speed to score on a groundout.
Starting pitcher
Jacob Mayers improved to 2-0 on the season after recording seven strikeouts, allowing one hit and two earned runs in five innings of action. Nico Sataformaggio gave up three hits and struck out two Tigers in 2.1 innings.
For Grambling, Tiger Borom hit a two-run blast to left center field and starting pitcher Randy Reyes (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after striking out six, allowing seven hits, and six earned runs in five innings of work.
GAME TWO Nicholls 24, Grambling 12 (7 inn.)
In the second game, the Red & Gray combined to score 19 runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to scoring the most runs in win since March 1, 2023, when they shut out Southeastern Baptist 20-0.
After falling behind 7-3, the Colonels erupted for seven runs in the home half of the fourth. The rally began with a
Jaden Collura base hit that brought home
Cade Crosby who opened the frame with a single. Kendrick added two RBIs with a single to right field, followed by a Gerrardo Villarreal RBI double to left field. The stanza was highlighted by three run blast by Felix to put Nicholls up 10-7.
The Colonels kept their momentum rolling by scoring 12 runs in the fifth. After
Narvin Booker Jr.,
Parker Coddou, and Williams walked to open the inning, Nicholls plated the first run with an Alvarez sacrifice fly. Kendrick and Villarreal drew walks that allowed Booker Jr. to score before Felix hit a single up the middle to allow Coddou to score.
With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Crosby and Wiliams walked two runs across before Booker Jr. hit a two-run single to right center field. He used his speed to take advantage of a throwing error and reach third base. Coddou brought Booker Jr. home with a single, followed by Alvarez who hit a two run double down the third base line. The scoring was capped by pinch hitter
Erick Ordonez who laced a single to plate Alvarez and put the Colonels up 22-7.
Gavin Galy pitched three innings and allowed three hits to earn his first win of the season.
Michael Guerrero went 2.1 innings and fanned five batters.
The Tigers tried to rally but only scored five runs in the final frame. Kyle Walker hit a two run double, Cameron Bufford and Julian Murphy hit RBI singles, and Chris Marcellus began the rally with a sacrifice fly.
