HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten 9-6 by Southern Miss at Pete Taylor Park on Tuesday night.
With two down in the second inning,
Kaden Amundson brought
Basiel Williams and
Narvin Booker Jr. to the plate with a double to right field. Then
Parker Coddou kept the scoring going with a single after Amundson used his speed to reach third on the throw during his hit. Coddou took advantage of a wild pitch to advance on base and scored on a throwing error to put the Colonels up 4-0.
In the home half of the second, USM responded with a Gabe Broadus run scoring single to left field. The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth on a wild pitch.
The Colonels regained a four-run advantage in the fifth frame when
Gerardo Villarreal, who led the Colonels with three hits, scored on a
Drake Anderson double. Williams and Booker Jr. drew back-to-back free passes to bring a second run across to put the Red & Gray up 6-2.
Nick Monistere, who put the Golden Eagles down one with a three-run homer to left field in the fifth, delivered the tying RBI single to set up Matthew Russo's walk off homerun.
Nico Saltaformaggio (3-4) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of action. Starting pitcher
Dylan Farley allowed two hits and one earned run in three full innings. Nico Mazza improved to 6-2 on the season after tallying four strikeouts and allowing one hit in two scoreless innings.
