THIBODAUX, LA – The Nicholls State University baseball team will play a three-game series at Houston Christian University on April 19-21.
Game one will begin at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. The second game will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the series finale will be on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Both teams dropped mid-week road contests on Tuesday night. Nicholls (24-14, 7-5 SLC) fell via a walk off home run at Southern Miss and HCU (13-22, 6-6 SLC) was beaten 10-0 by Houston. Last week in league play, the Colonels loss two out of three games against Northwestern State, while the Huskies won two out of three at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi.
Nicholls has one of the most efficient and productive offenses in the nation. Currently the Colonels have scored the 15th most runs (334), and hits (398), while boasting the 24th best batting average (.314). Additionally, the unit has 22nd most doubles (82), 26th most walks (208), and 32nd best on base percentage (.420). The Red & Gray sit atop the Southland Conference in those statistical categories.
The Colonels' offense is led by
Edgar Alvarez,
Garrett Felix,
Drake Anderson, and
Parker Coddou.
Alvarez boasts the nation's seventh-best batting average (.435), 11th most hits (60), 16th most doubles (16), and his 35 free passes help him hold the 11th best on base percentage (.539). Coddou is batting .307 with 47 hits including 11 doubles. He also has 23 RBI and has scored a SLC-high 48 runs.
Felix is hitting .333 with 29 RBI and has scored 33 times, while
Drake Anderson, who went 6-for-8 with five RBI at the plate against the Demons, lifted his batting average to .318 and is not tied with Felix for the most stolen bases on the team (9).
In the bullpen, starting pitchers
Michael Quevedo (4.56) and
Jacob Mayers (4.50) have combined for seven wins. Quevedo improved to 5-0 on the season after striking out eight batters, while allowing three runs and five hits in five full innings of action against NSU. Mayers leads the SLC in strikeouts (67) and opponents' batting average (.154). Relief pitcher
Nico Saltaformaggio (4.66) has been a reliable arm and three wins this season.
For the Huskies, Samuel Benjamin (.326) and Trevor Roper (.306) are the only two players hitting above .300. Benjamin has the second most home runs in the SLC (11) and 31 RBI. On the mound, Christian Diaz, and Parker Edwards post ERAs of 3.27 and 3.78 respectively.
