RUSTON, La – The Nicholls State University baseball team tallied 12 hits in its 10-7 loss to Louisiana Tech on J.C. Love Field at Patterson Park on Wednesday night.
After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Colonels' third frame explosion was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by
Gerardo Villarreal and
Garrett Felix. With two down,
Edgar Alvarez plated
Erick Ordonez who opened the frame with a double. Villarreal brought Alvarez and
Kade Turnage home to tie the game. Felix sent a full count pitch over the right flied wall to put Nicholls up 5-4.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in both the second and third innings. In the second stanza, Michael Ballard hit a home run on the frames opening pitch, followed by Kasten Furr and Cole McConnell run scoring singles and a Dalton Davis sacrifice fly. Davis hit a grand slam in the third to put the Bulldogs up 8-5.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Alvarez hit a leadoff double down the right field line and later scored on a fielder's choice. Furr hit a solo home run followed by a Jorge Corona run scoring double that put the Bulldogs up 10-6.
Ordonez opened the sixth with a single and later scored the Colonels' seventh run on an Alvarez single to left field.
Nicholls used seven different pitchers with two going 1 full inning, four going 1.1.
Dylan Farley and
Sam Hill gave up four hits and four runs apiece while
Jack Nelson and Aturo Rodriguez posted scoreless outings.
Nico Saltaformaggio and Chase Ricther provided scoreless innings of relief.
Jacob Mayers allowed four hits and two runs and two strikeouts.
Jacob Havern picked up the win for the Bulldogs, while Hill picked up his first loss of the season.
