THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team defeated Southern University 12-4 on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday night.
The game began with three scoreless innings until the Colonels allowed three runs in the fourth. In the home half of the frame, Nicholls' offense came alive after
Garrett Felix scored on a throwing error and
Narvin Booker Jr. plated
Drake Anderson to put the Colonels down 2-3.
The Red & Gray kept the momentum rolling into the fifth, as they scored took the lead on a
Cade Crosby two run single that brought
Edgar Alvarez and
Gerardo Villarreal home. Crosby was later caught stealing, but
Basiel Williams used his speed to score from third to put the Colonels on top 5-3.
Nicholls never looked back. After Southern scored on a groundout in the seventh, the Colonels plated four in the frame to put the game out of reach. Felix hit a two RBI double and scored on the following at bat as
Erick Ordonez hit a pinch hit double. Ordonez scored on an Anderson double down the third base line to extend the lead to five.
In the eighth, after Alvarez, Williams, and Villarreal reached base, Ordonez earned a RBI walk followed by an Anderson run scoring base knock for the Colonels' final run.
The Colonels used nine pitchers with each of them going a full frame.
Nico Saltaformaggio was the lone pitcher to strikeout the side as he tallied a third of the Colonels punch outs.
Arturo Rodriguez (2-2) earned his second victory of the season. Paytin Huff suffered the loss for Southern as he was one of three Jaguars' to allow three earned runs.

The Red & Gray (28-16, 10-5 SLC) will cross state lines for the final time this season to battle UIW in San Antonio, Texas on May 3-5.
