Colonel Women's Tennis suffers setback to Southeastern

THIBODAUX, La. - Still searching for its first league win, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team secured the doubles point against Southeastern and picked up another win in singles, but could not come away with the victory after dropping the final two matches in three sets in a 5-2 loss on Friday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

With the setback, Nicholls fell to 6-11 overall and 0-6 in the Southland. The loss was the 10th straight of the season and the second consecutive in the series against SLU (9-10, 2-4 SLC).

Like in the Lamar matchup, the Colonels grabbed a 1-0 lead after doubles play. Aada Inna and Sara Sophia Safarova got things started with a 6-1 win at No. 2 before Noemie Piquet and Lea Grinberg secured the point with a 6-2 triumph at No. 3.

The Lions answered in singles as Carla Bouygues was defeated on the top court in straight sets. The next two points were award to SLU after both Safavora and Grinberg retired in their matchups at 2 and 3. But Constanza Cruz kept Nicholls alive with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5

For the final two courts, Inna was shutout in her first set against Claudia Di Leonardo but bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second. Piquet was also blanked in her opening set but nearly returned the favor with a 6-1 victory. But both came up short in the third set as Inna fell 6-1 and Piquet was defeated by Taisia Bolsova, 6-3.
