THIBODAUX, La. –
Drake Anderson hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning in the Nicholls State University baseball team's 5-4 victory over Lamar University on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Friday night.
After a quick 1-2-3 inning on the mound by
Nico Saltaformaggio,
Drake Anderson sent the second pitch of the 11th frame over the wall in left field to secure the Red & Gray victory. Saltaformaggio earned his fifth win of the season after allowing one hit and one run in the final three innings of the game.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair that featured five ties and 15 total hits.
In the opening inning, the Colonels drew three consecutive free passes, and
Edgar Alvarez scored on a
Basiel Williams sacrifice fly. After a pair of scoreless frames, the Cardinals responded by scoring on a two out single to tie the game at 1 after four innings.
The teams exchanged runs in the fifth frame as
Kaden Amundson scored from second on a
Gerardo Villarreal base knock to center field after the Cardinals scored on a bases loaded walk.
After a scoreless sixth, the teams traded runs again in the seventh as Lamar scored on an Austin Roccaforte sacrifice fly before
Narvin Booker Jr. laced a home run do the right field line to retie the game at 3 apiece.
With two down, in the home half of the eighth,
MaCrae Kendrick came off the bench and belted a solo home run to right center field to put the Colonels up 4-3. The Cardinals tied the game on a groundout in the ninth.
Starting pitcher
Jacob Mayers allowed three hits and two runs while posting 10 strikeouts and nine walks.
Gavin Galy and allowed two hits and one run in 2.1 innings of work and
Arturo Rodriguez picked up one strikeout and pitched one scoreless frame.
For Lamar Brooks Caple allowed two hits and two runs in 6 full innings, Andres Perez and Kyle Moseley gave up oe run apiece. Peyton Havard suffered his third loss of the season after allowing two hits and one run.
