Colonels set for Series at UIW

THIBODAUX, La. – After picking up a win on Tuesday, the Nicholls State University baseball team will return to action and cross state lines for the final time this season to battle UIW in San Antonio, Texas on May 3-5.
 
The Colonels (28-16, 10-5 SLC) are second in the SLC standings and won a mid-week game against Southern on Tuesday night. The Cardinals (23-20, 8-7 SLC) are fourth in the standings and enter the weekend on a five-game losing streak including a walk off loss to Prairie View A&M on Tuesday night.
 
Nicholls has one of the most efficient and productive offenses in the nation. The unit has scored the 17th most runs (382) and 40th most hits (452), while posting the 34th best batting average (.306) and 35th best on base percentage (.415).
 
The Colonels' offense features multiple players that are batting over .300. Edgar Alvarez leads the way as he boasts the nation's sixth-best batting average (.422), 26th most hits (68), 52nd most doubles (16), and his 41 free passes help him hold the 13th best on base percentage (.531). He has produced 53 RBI and has scored a team-high 54 times.
 
In the bullpen, Jacob Mayers (4.44) leads the SLC in strikeouts (76) and opposing batting average (.166). Michael Quevedo (4.47) has five wins and ranks eighth in opposing batting average (.251) and has 56 strikeouts.
 
For UIW, Dalton Beck (.401) leads the team with 71 hits, 18 doubles, 12 home runs and 51 RBI. On the hill, Josh Salinas is 4-1 with 10 starts with 52 strikeouts, two complete games, and one shutout.
