Edgar Alvarez was selected to the 2024 Louisiana Sports Writers' Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana First Team while outfielder
Basiel Williams was named honorable mention, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Alvarez put together one of the most decorated seasons in school history after garnering Southland Conference Player of the Year, All-Southland First Team, Southland All-Defensive, Southland All-Tournament, and he was an All-Tournament selection at the Corvallis Regional. He also earned ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-America and the Perfect Game All-America Third Team honors and was named a ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove selection.
The Orlando, Florida native, wrapped up the season with a .405 batting average which included 92 hits with 21 doubles and 13 home runs. He racked up 29 multi-hit games including a career-high four hits against Tulane, had a 21-game hitting streak, and hit safely in all but seven games this season.
In addition to leading the Southland in batting average, hits, runs scored and on-base percentage, Alvarez's batting average ranked in the Top 10 of the NCAA while his on-base percentage and runs scored were 14th best in the nation.
In just three seasons with the Colonels, Alvarez finished second all-time with 29 career home runs, capped on a three-run go-ahead homer in the ninth inning against UC Irvine in the NCAA Regional. He also set the single-season RBI record after already breaking the school records for runs scored (76) and total bases (154).
Williams had an outstanding season for the Red & Gray that ended with him earning All-Southland Second Team and his late game heroics in back-to-back games against Southeastern in the SLC Tournament helped him earn Tournament MVP and be named to the All-Tournament squad.
The Hammond native, hit career best .310 and tallied 57 hits, 11 doubles, 8 home runs. He recorded 49 RBI and scored 37 times. Defensively, he recorded 81 putouts, one assists and a .995 field percentage with multiple diving catches.
Williams was efficient at the plate as he registered 18 multi-hit games, including three hit performances against McNeese and UIW. As mentioned earlier he hit home runs in back-to-back games against Southeastern in the SLC Tournament with the second one being a walk-off three run blast to secure the Colonels spot in the title game.
