Colonels Outlast Vaqueros, 58-50

Edinburg, Texas – In the first matchup since 1991, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 58-50 inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Monday night.
 
The Colonels stout defense was on full display as they forced UTRGV to shoot 26% from the field and 21% from beyond the arc. The Red & Gray also forced at least 19 turnovers for the third consecutive game.
 
The Colonels offense that shot 42% from the floor featured three double figure scorers. Senior forward Elli Garnett led the way with 16 points on six made field goals including one from long range. She has reached double figures for the second consecutive game and third time in league play.
 
Freshman guard Malaya Jones provided a spark off the bench with 11 points while senior forward Daelyn Craig added 10 points and three steals. Junior guard Tanita Swift stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Britiya Curtis chipped in with eight points and six boards.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nicholls started the game slow allowing an 11-1 run while shooting 0-8 from the floor to begin the contest. However, the Colonels respond with a 9-0 scoring run the final four minutes of the quarter to trail 14-10 at the end of Q1.
  • Colonels piece together a 13-0 run that lasted over six minutes to get back into the game.
  • Colonels kept the momentum rolling and opened Q2 with a 7-0. Despite UTRGV committing nine turnovers in they led 26-25 at the intermission.
  • The teams began the second half by trading five-point scoring surges and would go on to trade baskets for most of the frame.
  • Jones ended Q3 with back-to-back layups to put the up 39-35 heading into Q4. After a Craig jumper, Jones added a pair of layups to force an UTRGV timeout with seven minutes to go.
  • Following the timeout, Jones and Garnett hit jumpers on consecutive possessions followed by a Tanita Swift layup and free throws that put the Colonels up 53-43 and forced another UTRGV timeout (2:44).
  • Craig and Garnett hit foul shots down the stretch to hold the lead.
