THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University tennis program will get its 2025 season underway on Friday, Jan. 31 as both squads will take on Loyola New Orleans at the City Park Tennis Center.
The women's team is coming off a 7-14 season, highlighted by a win in the SLC Tournament over Southeastern. Nicholls will have the luxury of playing in front of its home crowd this year as the tournament will be held at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Returning for the women are seniors
Constanza Cruz and
Sophia Sara Safarova, junior
Noemie Piquet, and sophomore
Aada Inna. Cruz led the way in singles action a year ago with seven wins, while Safarova and Inna posted six victories. Piquet also chipped in with five wins. Inna paced the Colonels in doubles with eight total victories.
Joining the roster this season are
Amalie Grube Andersen,
Julia Bordiginon,
Blanca Losada, and
Paulina Villegas.
The men's squad went 12-7 last season which included a win over league foe Lamar.
Kotaro Matsumura is the top returner as he was named All-Southland in singles with a 13-3 record. He also secured double-digit wins in doubles with 10.
Gerhard Venter also returns after going 4-4 in singles.
Nicholls will feature six newcomers -- one transfer,
Colin Tavares, and five freshmen --
Jewan Labuschagne,
Maxwell Lindstedt,
Marcell Marki,
Felipe Spagnuolo, and Mike Wood. Tavares played at Eastern Florida State where he ranked in the top 15 in the nation in doubles both seasons.
HOME OPENER
Nicholls will make its home debut on Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Coastal Alabama Community College. The men start at 11 a.m. with the women set for 2 p.m.
