SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team had four double figure scorers and hit 10 triples in its 68-57 victory over UIW inside the McDermott Center on Thursday night.
Nicholls (9-5, 2-3 SLC) made 20 field goals while having its most efficient games of the season from beyond the arc (52.6%) and the charity stripe (85.7%). The Colonels hit 10 threes for the third time this season, first in SLC play and the unit hit at least 18 foul shots for the fourth time this season.
The Red & Gray was led by sophomore guard
Britiya Curtis who hit six field goals including four from long range to finish with a game-high 18 points. Junior guard
Tanita Swift and senior forward
Deonna Brister scored 14 points apiece while
Jesslynn Jalomo connected on three triples enroute to 11 points. The Colonels nearly had five double figure scorers as
Elli Garnett finished with nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got out to slow starts offensively with the squads combining for four points (2-2) and four turnovers the first four minutes.
- After a pair of Emani Burks fts, Curtis hit back-to-back triples to give Nicholls an 8-7 advantage at the 4:00 mark in Q1.
- Swift scored consecutive layups and the Colonels trailed by one at the end of Q1.
- Both teams hit four fgs apiece in Q2.
- Swift added seven points in Q2 including converting a three-point play to finish the half with a game-high 11 points. Curtis joined Swift in double figures (10).
- Colonels hit eight fgs and nine fts and led 28-27 at the intermission.
- Curtis picked up where she left off with a layup and jumper from beyond the arc to begin 3Q.
- After Curtis' fourth triple brought her total 18 Brister and Jalomo combined for 13 points including three triples.
- Colonels shot 63.3% in the frame and led the end of Q3 49-41.
- Colonels hit five fgs including two from beyond the arc and seven fts to keep their distance from the Cardinals.
- Jalomo hit two of her three triples and a layup to spark the Colonels in the fourth and give the Colonels a 13-point lead. Brister and Garnett hit shots from the charity stripe down the stretch to close the game.
