THIBODAUX, La -- The Nicholls State University women's soccer team returned home and secured its fourth overall tie and third consecutive draw of the season against UTRGV at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Thursday night.
The tone was set early as Nicholls' (4-7-4, 1-3-3 SLC)
Kaylie Harris broke free and scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Colonels up 1-0 less than five minutes into the contest. Harris has now notched a goal in three consecutive games and now ties
Avery Mondoux for the team high.
The teams traded goals prior to the intermission as UTRGV's Linnea Eld found Isabella Burntini who tied the game at one (30:38). The Colonels quickly responded during the chaos of a corner kick when
Paityn Bruce connected with
Cameron Bonadona who kicked the ball into the back of the net to put the Red & Gray up 2-1 (33:20). However, one minute later the Vaqueros tied the contest on a goal via Savannah Frisby (34:20).
The squads were tied at two following the action packed first stanza that featured both teams creating chances and playing physical. In the first frame, the Colonels took nine shots with five on target while the Vaqueros took 11 with seven on goal. Additionally, the teams combined for nine fouls including a red card by UTRGV's Abbie Bailey (17:24) who took down a Colonel to prevent a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper.
After fireworks in the first half, the defenses settled in and kept the offenses from scoring. Both teams took five shots in the second half as neither team generated a lot of chances. Red & Gray goalkeeper Aslinn Wright finished the game with six saves while the Vaqueros Emila Compain had five. The defensive battle was physical as both teams committed six fouls in the second half.
The three straight ties for Nicholls is significant as for the first time since 2016, the Colonels have recorded standing points in three consecutive contests.
