EDINBURG, Texas -- The Nicholls State University women's basketball team had four double figure scorers in its 66-56 victory over UTRGV on Wednesday afternoon.
Nicholls (7-4, 3-1 SLC) led by as much as 24 points as they played stout defense throughout the contest. The unit had nine steals and forced 21 total turnovers. The squad scored 19 points off the takeaways while allowing the Vaqueros to shoot 28.6% from the floor.
The Red & Gray offense was led by
Sh'Diamond McKnight who had 14 points.
Tanita Swift stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Jesslynn Jalomo hit three triples and finished with 12 points while
Emani Burks hits five field goals and finished with 11 points.
Anyra Wilson was a steady hand as she scored six points, hauled in 11 rebounds, dished eight assists, and had three takeaways.
The Colonels led for most of the game as they held a one-point lead heading into the second quarter. Nicholls doubled the scoring output of the Vaqueros in the second frame to generate a 30-21 advantage at the intermission.
A third quarter explosion was the difference as Jalomo scored 11 of the Colonels' 24 points to give the squad a 54-32 lead heading into the final stanza. UTRGV fought back in the fourth as they hit seven field goals including three from distance and added seven free throws to score 24 points. However, the Colonels were able to keep their distance by converting free throws down the stretch.
