HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team held at halftime lead but was defeated 63-50 by Southeastern inside the University Center on Saturday afternoon.
Nicholls (16-9, 9-7 SLC) made 13 field goals while shooting 54.2% from the floor in the first half. The teams traded baskets for most the first quarter as the Colonels hit six shots compared to seven for the Lady Lions.
The second quarter was different as the Colonels picked up their defensive intensity to allow SLU to connect on three of 12 field goals in the second frame while the Colonels hit seven. The Lady Lions hit five free throws to keep pace as the Colonels led 31-29 at the intermission.
The Colonels' offense went ice cold in the second half as the they shot 4-28 (14%) from the field in the second half. SLU began to pull away in the third as they hit eight field goals and held the Colonels to four free throws. Nicholls trailed 48-35 heading into the fourth quarter. The Colonels hit four field goals including three triples in the final stanza.
The Red & Gray offense was led by
Elli Garnett who scored a game high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Daelyn Craig added eight points and five boards, while
Violette Skipworth and
Britiya Curtis combined for 11 points and eight rebounds.
