THIBODAUX, La. – After a pair of early week games, the Nicholls State University baseball team will begin Southland Conference play with a three-game series against McNeese in Lake Charles on Feb. 28-March 2.
First pitch from Joe Miller Ballpark on Friday is slated for 6 pm while Saturday's action will begin at 2 pm and Sunday's at 4 pm. All three contests will be streamed via ESPN+.
Nicholls (5-4) began the week with a pair of losses to in state foes LSU and Tulane while McNeese (7-1) is coming off a shutout victory over Louisiana.
The Red & Gray offense is hitting .237 and is led by
Karson Irvin (.464) who has 13 hits, including two doubles, nine RBI while scoring seven times.
Chase Jans (.297) has 11 hits and one home run while
Jaden Collura (.296) has added eight hits.
The Colonels bullpen has 84 total strikeouts features five arms with double figure punchouts.
Alec Sparks (1.80) and
Michael Lindsey (5.79) lead the way with 13 apiece while
Dalton Hill (.90),
Cole Simoneaux, and
Koen van 'T Klooster has 11 apiece.
The Cowboys do not have a player with double figure hits but have three starters batting over .300. Easton Dowell (.375) leads the way with nine hits including four doubles and one homer. Larry Edwards Jr. (.350) and Conner Westenburg (.320) add seven and eight hits respectively.
McNeese's pitching staff has been stout this season as Alexis Gravel (0.00) leads the unit with 15 strikeouts followed by Sergio Lopez (1.00) and Jake Blackwell (2.00) who have 14 and 13 punchouts respectively.
The Colonels trail the all-time series 109-95 dating back to 1960. The Colonels have won four of the last five meetings including a 15-1 rout in the 2024 SLC Tournament Championship game.
