MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Playing the same opponents at the same time as opening day, the Nicholls State University softball team saw the same results as the Colonels fell 14-3 to North Alabama before defeating Alabama State, 12-6, on the final day of the Stingers Classic.
Nicholls finished the weekend with a 2-2 record.
Riley Rutherford and
Erin Krause paced the offense in the four games with six hits each and
Ally Mooneyham totaled five.
Molly VandenBout and
Claire Sisco also chipped in with four hits.
Game 1 - North Alabama 14, Nicholls 3
The Lions scored 12 unanswered runs and finished with 18 hits to sweep the Colonels for the weekend.
Nicholls once again scored two in the first inning before UNA tied it up in the second. The Colonels went back up in the bottom half and the Lions evened it up in the third. From then on, it was all North Alabama. The Lions plated two in the fifth and sixth innings before exploding for seven in the seventh.
Krause went 2-for-4 at the plate as Nicholls totaled six hits. Both of her singles resulted in runs, driving in one in the first before a run scored in the second following her hit and an error.
Molly Yoo took the loss in relief with two earned runs on three hits in one inning. VandenBout totaled two earned in 4.1 innings and struck out two.
Briley Dover led UNA with five hits. Emily Simon tossed 4.0 shutout innings for the win.
Game 2 - Nicholls 12, Alabama State 6
After falling behind 3-1 through one inning, Nicholls put together a seven-run fourth and went on to defeat Alabama State for the second time in as many days.
The Colonels racked up 11 hits with Cisco, VandenBout and Mooneyham tallying two each.
Averi Paden notched the win with three earned runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.
Nicholls took advantage of miscues by ASU to plate their first three runs. In the third, VandenBout singled for a 4-3 lead.
The seven-run frame was started on a Krause RBI single.
Reagan Heflin followed with a 2-run double and then three runs scored on an error and passed ball, giving Nicholls an 11-3 lead.
ASU avoided the run-rule with two runs in the fifth. Freshman
Nevanna Smith added a run for the Colonels with a single in the final inning.
Sierra Ouellette tossed 3.0 innings of relief with four strikeouts.
