THIBODAUX, La. – After taking game one on Friday night, the Nicholls State University baseball team exploded for 10 runs on a season-best 15 hits in its 10-0 victory on Saturday night.
Nicholls (10-14, 5-6, SLC) set the tone early as starting pitcher
Alec Sparks began the game with three strikeouts before the Colonels' offense scored 5 runs on six hits in the opening stanza.
After
Karson Irvin was hit by games opening pitch,
Chase Jans,
Jaden Collura,
Aaron Biediger, and
Logan Mock tallied four consecutive base hits to put the Red & Gray up 2-0. Next, Biediger and Collura scored on consecutive groundouts to set up A.J. Cappell who brought Mock home with a two out single to right field.
Sparks, who finished with eight strikeouts, provided four more scoreless frames before the Colonels extended their lead with three runs in the fifth. With one down, Jenkins and Cappell got the momentum rolling with back-to-back hits before scoring on consecutive two out base knocks by Irvin and Jans to put the Red & Gray up 8-0.
Relief pitcher
Cole Simoneaux and the defense kept the stout play going as he pitched two scoreless and hitless stanzas. In the home half of the seventh,
Andy Miller and Irvin who reached base on throwing errors scored the series clinching runs.
Eight different Colonels tallied hits and runs as Collura and Biediger led the way with three hits apiece. Jans, Jenkins, and Cappell had two hits while Irvin, Mock and Miller claimed one.
Rey Mendoza and Ryder Hernadez tallied the lone hits for UIW (11-14, 0-11 SLC).
