THIBODAUX, La. – Following a run rule victory on Saturday, the Nicholls State University baseball team's comeback efforts fell short in its 4-3 loss to UIW on Sunday afternoon.
After falling behind 4-1 heading into the ninth, Nicholls (10-15, 5-7, SLC) scored two runs on two hits but left two runners stranded.
After
Jaden Collura was hit by a pitch, pinch hitter
Narvin Booker Jr. laced a two out single to right field.
Noah Detillier brought Collura and Booker Jr. home with a double to right center to cut the deficit to one. UIW (12-14, 1-11 SLC) made a pitching change and got a groundout to end the game.
The Colonels started roughly as they walked three batters, committed an error and allowed the Cardinals to take an 1-0 lead on a wild pitch. However, in the home half of the opening frame,
Karson Irvin smoked a leadoff double to left center and later scored on an error.
The game was tied 1-1 until the fourth stanza when the Cardinals scored three runs on four hits to go up 4-1. Following a night where the Colonels matched their season high in hits (15) the offense cooled off and tallied four hits.
The Red & Gray used five pitchers. Starting pitcher
Michael Lindsey faced three batters before
Luke McGibboney took over for 3.2 frames.
Koen van 'T Klooster allowed two hits in three scoreless frames before
Joseph Bordelon (1.1) and
Cole Poirrier (1.0) finished the game.
