BILOXI, MS. – The Nicholls State University baseball team defeated Southern Miss 8-5 in the Whitney Hancock Classic at Kessler Federal Park on Tuesday night.
Nicholls (11-15, 5-7 SLC) tallied 13 hits enroute to its first victory over a ranked opponent since the Colonels took down No. 1 LSU during the 2023 campaign.
Following a pair of scoreless innings,
Andy Miller, who finished one triple shy of the cycle, put the Colonels on the board with his first home run of the season. In the ensuing stanza,
Carter Jenkins hit a single before scoring on a Miller base knock to right center to put the Red & Gray up 2-0. However, the Golden Eagles tied the game with a two-run blast by Matthew Russo.
Chase Jans began the fifth frame with a leadoff single before scoring on an
Aaron Biediger double to left field. In the sixth,
Karson Irvin and Miller laced back-to-back doubles to put the Colonels up 4-2 before Russo hit another homer to cut the deficit to one.
The Colonels exploded for four runs on three hits and three errors in the seventh. After
Jaden Collura hit a leadoff single and Biediger reached on a fielding error, pinch hitter
Narvin Booker Jr. plated Collura with a bunt single. Next, Biediger scored as Noah Detiller reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Booker scored on a Jenkins groundout before A.J. Cappell plated Detiller with a single up the middle. After USM responded with one run the Colonels led 8-4 after seven frames.
For the Colonels, starting pitcher
Dalton Hill (3.1) allowed three hits and two runs while relief pitcher
Harper Jordan (2.2) earned his third win of the season as he struck out two batters while allowing one hit and one run.
Cole Simoneaux got two outs in the seventh before
Cole Poirrier, who got out of a bases loaded jam to finish the frame, went on to finish the game with three strikeouts enroute to his first save of the season.
The Colonels are 3-8-1 against the Golden Eagles dating back to 2006. The Red & Gray have won two of the last three matchups including the last two meetings against USM in Biloxi.
