THIBODAUX, La. – After being held to one hit through eight innings, the Nicholls State University baseball team exploded for five hits and three runs in its 3-2 comeback victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night.
Nicholls (6-9, 1-3 SLC) bats were cold for most of the game with
Chase Jans recording the lone hit until the final frame. Following back-to-back 1-2-3 frames from relief pitcher
Harper Jordan the Colonels offense put it together.
Christan Westcott began the ninth with a leadoff base hit up the middle and later went down via a fielder's choice. With two down, Jans laced his second hit of the game to put
Karson Irvin in scoring position after he beat out a potential game inning double play.
Down to their last out, and facing a full count,
Jaden Collura plated Irvin with a single to left field followed by another full count run scoring hit by pinch hitter
Aaron Biediger to tie the game at 2. After nearly throwing a complete game, the Islanders took starter Zach Garcia out for Cam Soliz. With Collura at third,
Logan Mock had the game winning base hit to left field to secure the first conference victory of the season for the Colonels.
On the mound, Jordan improved to 2-1 on the season after striking out three in two scoreless frames. Starting pitcher
Michael Lindsey fanned seven while allowing eight hits and two runs.
For the Islanders, Garcia finished with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and one walk. Cade Sanchez, Logan Vaughan, and Mason Persons finished with two hits apiece.
