THIBODUAX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team secured its first Southland series victory with a 15-3 run-rule win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Nicholls (7-9, 2-3 SLC) led 12-1 heading into the seventh before AMCC (6-9, 0-2 SLC) pushed across two runs to avoid the run-rule. But with two on in the bottom half,
Fisher Ingersoll launched an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for the walk-off victory.
Nine different Colonels totaled at least one hit, with
Jaden Collura,
Aaron Biediger,
Logan Mock, and
Christian Westcott all tallying two hits. Collura led the team with four RBIs.
Alec Sparks (3-1) picked up the win, pitching 6.1 innings with six strikeouts. He allowed one earned run on six hits and walked two.
A leadoff triple to center by Biediger in the second inning led to the first run as he scored on a groundout. Then in the third, the Colonels scored six runs on seven hits for a commanding 7-0 lead. Collura started the big inning when he laced a two-run double just inside the foul line in left field. Mock followed with a double to left for the third run.
Carter Jenkins added another run on an infield single, then the sixth run scored on a grounder. Westcott capped the inning with an RBI single.
After making it 8-0 with a run on an error in the fourth, Nicholls pushed its lead to 11-0 in the fifth.
Chase Jans brought home a runner on a sacrifice fly before Collura lofted a single to center for two more RBIs.
The teams traded runs in the sixth before the final inning. Sparks looked to close out his complete game but the Islanders loaded the bases with one down.
Kaden Cloward took over on the mound and forced a groundout which allowed a run to score. Then two walks pushed in another run to make it 12-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Biediger and Collura drew walks before Ingersoll hit his second homer of the season.
Luke Singleton was tagged with the loss with seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. Cade Sanchez led AMCC with two of their six hits.
