BEAUMONT, Texas. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten by Lamar 9-8 at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Saturday night.
Nicholls (12-23, 6-14 SLC) held a 6-2 lead heading into the eighth inning before Lamar (29-8, 11-6 SLC) scored seven runs in the final two innings to clinch the series.
The Colonels offense got off to a quick start as they scored three runs on four hits in the first two innings. In the first, leadoff batter,
Karson Irvin was hit by pitch and later scored on a wild pitch. After
Chase Jans singled, he scored on a play that saw
Carter Jenkins reach on an error. A.J. Cappell opened the next frame with a single, followed by Irvin's second hit and a run scoring double by Jans to put the Colonels up 3-0.
Following a scoreless third, both teams scored runs in the fourth. Jans opened the stanza with his third hit and scored on a play where
Aaron Biediger reached base on a fielder's choice. The Cardinals scored their first run of the game on a ground out.
After Lamar scored on a balk in the fifth, the Colonels scored two runs in the sixth.
Aaron Biediger doubled down the line before
Narvin Booker Jr. was hit by a pitch. The pair scored on a
Carter Jenkins single to left center and a ground out, respectively to put the Red & Gray up 6-2. The Colonels held the Cardinals scoreless in the sixth and seventh.
