THIBODAUX, La. – After taking game one on Friday night, the Nicholls State University baseball team dropped both contests in a double header against HCU on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: Nicholls 4, HCU 6
The first game of the day was a defensive battle as both starting pitchers went at least seven innings. HCU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as they score one run in the first two frames. However,
Alec Sparks pitched four scoreless innings including retiring the Huskies in order in the third and fourth.
Both teams scored on groundouts in the seventh before scoring three runs apiece in the eighth. After the Huskies extended their lead to 5 (6-1), the Colonels responded with three runs on three hits. Leadoff batter
Karson Irvin got the offense started with a single followed by a
Chase Jans base knock. The pair scored on a three-run blast to left field by
Aaron Biediger to cut the deficit to two. The Colonels offense couldn't keep the momentum rolling after relief pitcher
Woody Brennan retired the Huskies in order in the ninth.
Sparks (4-2) finished the game with five strikeouts while allowing nine hits and six runs across 7.2 innings of action. A.J. Cappell and Irvin led the Colonels with two hits apiece while
Fisher Ingersoll,
Logan Mock, Jans, and Biediger each added one.
GAME TWO: Nicholls 2, HCU 4
The second game of the day was also a defensive battle as both starting pitchers
Michael Lindsey and Ben Smith began the game with three scoreless innings. After HCU took a 1-0 lead on a ground out in the fourth, the Colonels responded by scoring one run on three hits in the fifth. Ingersoll and Irvin had consecutive one out singles before
Jaden Collura plated Ingersoll with a base knock to right field. The Huskies added three runs across the next two frames before the Red & Gray responded with one in the home half of the seventh on a Jans sacrifice fly.
Lindsey finished with three strikeouts while allowing five hits and two runs in five full innings of action.
Cole Poirrier had two strikeouts while allowing four hits and two runs in three full frames before
Cole Simoneaux struck out all three batters in the ninth.
Carter Jenkins and Irvin led the Colonels with two hits apiece while
Jaden Collura, Booker Jr., Cappell, and Ingersoll each added one.
