THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team utilized stout defense to defeat North Dakota 2-1 at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After roughly 20 minutes of scoreless action and following a foul in the box, Nicholls midfielder
Mylea Riggle converted her second penalty kick of the season to put the Colonels up 1-0 (24:35). The teams played a physical first half as the teams combined for nine fouls. The Red & Gray led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Colonels quickly extended their lead following the break as
Avery Mondoux found the back of the net from long range to put the squad up 2-0 (46:59). The Fighting Hawks applied pressure the entire second half and converted a penalty kick (89:26) late. However, the Colonels defense held strong to secure the first Red & Gray victory of the season.
Despite being outshot 28 to five overall, the Red & Gray took advantage of their chances and played stout defense in their end. Goalkeeper
Aislinn Wright registered 10 saves including eight in the second stanza.
The physicality from the first half carried over into the second as the teams combined for 16 total fouls including a yellow card by UND's Sarah McCracken (75:11).
