Nicholls Soccer Earns First Victory of Season over North Dakota

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team utilized stout defense to defeat North Dakota 2-1 at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

After roughly 20 minutes of scoreless action and following a foul in the box, Nicholls midfielder Mylea Riggle converted her second penalty kick of the season to put the Colonels up 1-0 (24:35). The teams played a physical first half as the teams combined for nine fouls. The Red & Gray led 1-0 at the intermission.

The Colonels quickly extended their lead following the break as Avery Mondoux found the back of the net from long range to put the squad up 2-0 (46:59). The Fighting Hawks applied pressure the entire second half and converted a penalty kick (89:26) late. However, the Colonels defense held strong to secure the first Red & Gray victory of the season.

Despite being outshot 28 to five overall, the Red & Gray took advantage of their chances and played stout defense in their end. Goalkeeper Aislinn Wright registered 10 saves including eight in the second stanza.
