THIBODAUX, La. – Following the first win of the season earlier in the week, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team kept its momentum rolling as they defeated Mississippi Valley State 3-0 at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Thursday night.
The Colonels dominated the match and took advantage of crucial mistakes by the Devillettes. The Red & Gray outshot MVSU 35-3 and earned 10 more corner kick opportunities.
Nicholls broke the tie 20 minutes into the contest when
Kaylie Harris found the back of the net off an
Alyssa Wheeler well placed corner kick. Both teams played hard the rest of the half as the Colonels led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Colonels found success on another set piece as
Avery Mondoux deflected
Sara Sigurdsson's free kick into the back of the net (58:56).
Mylea Riggle put the game on ice by converting a penalty kick late (63:15).
Seven different Colonels tallied at least three shot attempts with Riggle leading the unit with five.
Kate Guillory, Harris and Wheeler added four shots apiece, while
Sarah Ortleib and
Sammi Doyle each had three.
For MVSU, Lilly Gansauge (2) and Alaina Martindale (1) took their shots while goalkeeper Genesis Austin recorded 16 saves.
