MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team wrapped up nonconference play with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Alabama State on Sunday afternoon.
Alabama State (0-8-1) scored two first-half goals off free kicks before
Sammi Doyle found the net for Nicholls (3-4-1) to trim the deficit in half. After the break,
Avery Mondoux scored twice including the game-winner in the 85th minute to lift the Colonels to a win in their final match before Southland play.
Nicholls held a slim 15-14 advantage in shots with nine on goal. For ASU, McKinley Hacker had three of their five shots on target and accounted for both goals. Her first came in the sixth minute before firing in another from 45 yards out for the 2-0 lead.
Kate Newchurch took over at goalkeeper for the Colonels and kept the Hornets off the board the rest of the way, finishing with three saves in 67 minutes.
The Colonels answered in the 24th minute when Doyle scored her first goal of the season off a Mondoux assist.
Early in the second half,
Mylea Riggle found room for her free ball and it led to Mondoux's first goal, tying the match at 2-2. Neither team would score again for the next 30-plus minutes until Mondoux pushed through the game-winner.
Mondoux's two-goal performance was the first for her career and first for the Colonels since
Koryn Barrett scored twice in a win over Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 9 of last season. With her assist and two goals, Mondoux's five points were also the most for a Colonel since Blaire Laiche had six in a match in 2019.
