SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A goal in the opening seconds by UIW proved to be more than enough as the Nicholls State University women's soccer team fell 2-0 Thursday night in its Southland Conference opener.
UIW (3-3-1, 1-0 SLC) wasted no time as the Cardinals moved the ball quickly into the box after the opening kick. Tyler Coker sent a cross in front of the net and found Atiana Lara for a goal just 15 seconds into the match. UIW added another goal in the 78th minute to make the final.
Nicholls (3-5-1, 0-1 SLC) was never able to get anything going offensively, being outshot 15-2 while seeing an 8-0 UIW advantage in corner kicks. The lone shot on goal came in the 23rd minute after a cross ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced to
Mylea Riggle for a short attempt. In the second half,
Paityn Bruce sent a shot high before UIW's Montana Mathews added the second goal of the night.
Aislinn Wright saw all 90 minutes at goalkeeper and finished with 10 saves. UIW's Hannah Alexander notched her second straight shutout and third of the season.
