CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Sophomore midfielder
Mylea Riggle scored the game winning goal in the Nicholls State University women's soccer team 2-1 victory over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Thursday night.
Riggle's fourth goal of the season game in the 88th minute when she rifled a shot from outside the box. The finish secured the Colonels' first Southland Conference victory since 2018, breaking a 70-game winless slide.
Nicholls (3-5-1, 1-1 SLC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in highlight fashion as
Avery Mondoux found space to blast a long left footed shot past the goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season (26:34). The Islanders offense was relentless in the first half as they took 10 shots, and four corner kicks compared to the Red & Gray who had three shots and zero corner kicks. Despite the difference, the Colonels led 1-0 at the intermission.
After the Islanders tied the contest five minutes into the second half when Mai-Lisa Atis found the back of the net; the Colonels turned up their offensive intensity in the second stanza as they took 11 shots and garnered six corners. Riggle led the way with four shots followed by
Lillie Mazur and
Sammi Doyle who took three apiece. Mondoux took two while
Cameron Bonadona and
Nevaeh Garris each had one.
The Colonels' defense was stout throughout the contest as goalkeeper
Aislinn Wright tallied seven saves. The defense allowed six shot attempts and five corner kicks in the second half. Overall, the physical contest saw 22 total fouls including five yellow cards.
