Colonels’ Offense Explodes in Sweep Over Cardinals

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team posted a .299 hitting percentage with 35 kills and 10 service aces in the Colonels'  3-0 victory over Lamar inside Stopher Gym on Thursday night.
 
Nicholls' (8-8, 1-2 SLC) set the tone early as they had 11 kills en route to a 25-15 opening set victory. The Colonels' effort was highlighted in the second set as they offense recorded 14 kills and a .433 hitting percentage to run away with the second set, 25-14. After trailing 11-7 in the final set, Nicholls responded by putting together a 18-10 run to take the set 25-21. The Colonels snapped a seven-game slide in the series against the Cardinals, picking up their first victory since 2022.
 
Nicholls' offense was spearheaded by outside hitter Kera Arrington who had 12 kills. Middle blocker Maya Schirmer was stout on both ends of the court as she had seven kills and six blocks. Fellow middle blocker Amelie Shalfoon had six kills and four blocks while Madison Smith had four kills and a team-high six service aces. The Red & Gray attack was paced by setters Jenna Cicherski and Isabella Padilla who dished 17 and 10 assists, respectively.
 
Freshman libero Natalia Navarro anchored the Colonel defense with 13 digs. Cicherski, Padilla, and Smith combined for 21 digs. At the net, the Colonels finished with 14 blocks as Zahahrah Edwards-Wyllie (4), Shalfoon (3), and Harper Holden (1) followed Schirmer's lead.
 
For Lamar, Nisaan Martinez and Gabrielle St. Louis led the offense with 10 and nine kills, respectively. The Cardinal's attack was paced by Katelyn Hughes and Alexa Gonzalez who combine for 28 assists. Madelynn Coy and Kiana Souza led the team with seven digs apiece.
