THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will cross state lines to battle the University of South Alabama on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch from Stanky Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Nicholls (18-18, 10-10) is coming off a weekend where they took two of three home games against Lamar. The weekend's victories were highlighted by stellar pitching on Friday night and relentless comeback effort to secure the series in walk off fashion on Saturday night.
In Friday's win, starting pitcher
Dawson Richard and relief pitcher
Peyton Lacy combined for 10 strikeouts while allowing nine base runners in an efficient game. Richard struck out six batters and allowed three hits in six full frames of work to earn his third victory of the season. Lacy took over in the seventh and fanned four batters in three full stanzas to earn his first save of the year.
On Saturday, the Colonels trailed by six before climbing all the way back to win the game in extra innings. Designated hitter
Nico Rijo-Berger laced a base hit up the middle to bring
Fisher Ingersoll home to complete the comeback. The Red & Gray had 13 hits and received stout pitching down the stretch from relief pitcher
Cole Simoneaux who tallied five strikeouts in 1.2 innings of action to secure his second victory of the season.
South Alabama (21-15, 8-7 SBC) enters the week on a two-game winning streak after taking the final two games of a road series against Georgia Southern. The Jaguars exploded for 13 runs in both victories after scoring three in the series opener on Friday night.
Earlier this season, Nicholls' comeback effort fell short as they dropped a midweek game against the USA (7-5) in February. Nicholls trails the all-time series against USA 13-9 dating back to 2008. In that span, the Colonels have beaten the Jaguars in Mobile three times and the last Red & Gray victory was a neutral site contest in Biloxi in 2016.
