THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University Vice President of Athletics and Athletic Director
Jonathan Terrell has named Jayln Johnson-Joubert as the head coach for the Colonels' women's basketball program on Friday.
"Coach Jayln Johnson-Joubert is the perfect person to take the helm of our program and she's a true players' coach, an incredibly hard worker, and someone who will ensure continuity for our team," Terrell said. "We are excited to see her in this new role and confident she will continue the positive trajectory of Colonels Women's Basketball."
Johnson-Joubert spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant and is now taking over as the 11th head coach in program history. Johnson-Joubert began coaching in 2017 after a decorated collegiate career from 2012-16 and a professional stint.
Johnson-Joubert is looking forward to her new role.
"I feel very blessed for this opportunity, and I want to thank
Justin Payne and
Jonathan Terrell for believing in me and trusting me with this role," Johnson-Joubert said. "I've learned a lot from JP and seen the great job he's done building and leading this program. His standards, attention to detail, and leadership have made a big impact on me. I'm grateful for that experience and excited to use what I've learned to keep building something special here."
Johnson-Joubert spoke about what to expect from the Colonels under her leadership.
"You can expect energy, passion, and a fiery coach who shows up every day ready to compete and lead," Joubert said. "Our foundation is the 3 Ds, defense, discipline, and development, and we will live by them. We will play fast and defend at a high level. Our team will be gritty, tough, and take a whole lot of pride in the name on the front of the jersey. Standards will be high, energy and effort will be non-negotiable, and everything will be earned."
The Jennings, Louisiana native started her collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Louisiana-Monroe in 2021. She stayed there for multiple seasons before taking over head coaching duties at Hathaway High School in 2023. After two seasons there, she came south to Thibodaux to join
Justin Payne's staff.
Johnson-Joubert played three seasons in Spain before coming home to Louisiana to begin her coaching career. She spent the 2020-21 season as the head coach at Bethel Christian prior to the school's closure. Johnson quickly shifted right down the road to Jennings High School and finished the season as their assistant coach.
