HOUSTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team registered 12 hits in its 10-6 victory over Houston Cristian on Husky Field on Friday night.
After a rough outing in the series opener, Nicholls offense set the tone early as
Caston Thompson blasted his ninth home run of the season to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.
The Red & Gray extended their lead via a ground out in the second inning before scoring two more in the third on a stolen base by
Casey Artigues and a base knock by Thompson to put the Colonels up 5-0. HCU scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third before exploding for five runs on three home runs in the bottom of the fourth.
After the Huskies took a 6-5 lead, the Colonels hit three consecutive doubles to retake the lead. With two down
Matt Melancon doubled down the right field line before scoring on a Thompson double.
Carter Jenkins plated Thompson with his own double.
Both teams went scoreless for the next three stanzas. Relief pitcher
Peyton Lacy gave the Colonels two consecutive scoreless frames before
Cole Poirrier took over and kept the Huskies off the board in the eighth.
In the ninth,
Jaxon Milam got the offense going with a leadoff base knock before scoring on an Artigues triple. Later, Artigues and Thompson scored on consecutive pitches as one was a wild pitch and the other a passed ball that led to a throwing error by the catcher.
Dalton Hill took over on the mound and allowed a pair of tow out base knocks before Melancon ended the game with a spectacular diving catch in shallow center field.
Thompson led the Colonels with three hits and four RBI while Artigues, Melancon, and Giger had two hits apiece.
Logan Terry, Jenkins, and Milam rounded out the offense. Lacy earns his first victory of the season as he allowed three hits and one earned run in four full innings of work. Starting pitcher
Dawson Richard allowed one hit and one earned run in three full frames.
