THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team split a double header against the University of New Orleans on Saturday night.
GAME ONE: Nicholls 4, New Orleans 10
Despite having four more hits, Nicholls comeback effort fell short in game one as UNO took advantage of walks and defensive miscues throughout the game.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings before UNO scored on a play that featured a throwing error by the Colonels in the third. The Privateers extended their lead with a home run in the fifth.
Following a scoreless sixth frame the teams combined for seven runs in the seventh. In the top of the stanza, the Privateers scored on a passed ball before Kruise Newman blasted a three run home run to make the score 6-0.
The Red & Gray responded with three runs in the home half of the frame.
Fisher Ingersoll put the Colonels on the board with a lead off home run. Following a fly out,
Caston Thompson walked before
Carter Jenkins doubled to right field to get two runners in scoring position. Thompson scored on a
Keegan Giger sacrifice fly and Jenkins scored on a
Greyson Shafer base hit up the middle.
Nico Rijo-Berger plated
Logan Terry with a two out single in the eighth to cut the deficit to two. UNO took control of the game with a solo home run and two RBI double to go up 10-4 in the ninth.
Overall, the Colonels had 14 hits and left 11 runners stranded as they couldn't take advantage of runners in scoring position in multiple innings. Jenkins and Shafer led the way with three hits apiece while Giger and Terry each added two.
Starting pitcher
Haden Luke had a solid outing as he posted 11 strikeouts while allowing three hits and two runs in five full frames.
Karson Trichel had two strikeouts and allowed four runs in two full innings of work while Owen Schexanydre and
Caleb Dyess allowed two runs apiece.
GAME TWO: Nicholls 11, UNO 10
After falling behind 8-1 Nicholls stormed back by scoring four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game.
Thompson and Jenkins worked one out free passes before Milam plated Thompson with a base knock to right field. Shafer cut the deficit in half with a three-run blast to left field.
After a scoreless fifth frame, Shafer got the offense sparked with another home run to right field. Next, Ingersoll plated Mabry who reached on an error before Rijo-Berger brought Logan and Ingersoll around with a base knock that gave the Colonels a 9-8 lead.
The Colonels extended the lead with a two out, two run home run by Logan in the bottom of the seventh. UNO scored two runs in the top of the eighth before
Eli Waters retired the Privateers in order in the ninth to secure the victory.
Overall, the Colonels had 12 hits as Terry led the way with three. Shafer and Giger added two apiece. On the mound,
Tyler Avery picked up five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work to secure his third victory of the season.
