THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team split contests on its opening day as they beat Stonehill (3-2) and lost to Oral Roberts (2-3) inside Stopher Gym on Friday afternoon.
NICHOLLS 3, Stonehill 2
Nicholls began the day by dominating the first set of the season 25-15. However, Stonehill responded by taking the second set 25-21 before the Colonels took the third set 25-20. The Skyhawks won the fourth set 25-21 to force a winner takes all fifth stanza that the Colonels ran away with 15-12.
Senior outside hitter
Tierney Terrell led the way with 13 kills and 12 digs to record her first double-double of the season. The Red & Gray offense tallied 51 kills with a .281 hitting percentage was paced effortlessly by setter
Isabella Padilla who dished 33 assists.
Kera Arrington recorded 12 kills while
Maya Schirmer had nine kills in her Colonel debut.
The Colonel defense was anchored by
Harper Holden and Zahahrah Edwards-Wylie who had four blocks apiece. Schirmer added three blocks and a team high four service aces to round out her stat sheet with a team high 15.5 points.
Natalia Navarro had 11 digs while Padilla and
Lizzie Kraft combined for 13.
Nicholls 2, Oral Roberts 3
Nicholls got out to an excellent start in the second game of the day as they took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20, respectively. However, ORU bounced back offensively as the Golden Eagles recorded 40 of their 64 kills in the final three sets to secure the victory.
The Colonels attack was spearheaded by Edwards-Wiley who posted 15 kills. Terrell and Schirmer added 11 kills apiece to Nicholls total (61). The Red & Gray offense had two main setters as Padialla posted 30 assists while
Jenna Cicherski added 16.
The defense was led by Schrimer who had seven blocks while Terrell added five. Navarro finished with a team high 18 digs while Kraft had 16.
