THIBODAUX, La. -- Nicholls State University midfielder
Kate Guillory scored the game-winning goal in the Colonels' 1-0 victory over UIW at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Thursday night.
Both teams battled and had multiple chances to score. Guillory broke the tie when she picked up a loose ball on one side of midfield and raced past multiple defenders down the field to score her second goal of the season with 23 minutes remaining.
After playing stout defense the rest of the match, the Red & Gray earned their first Southland Conference home victory since 2018 while also snapping a 12-match skid in the series against UIW.
Nicholls took 12 shots with eight in target. Guillory led the way with three attempts while
Jezlyn Nelson,
Alyssa Wheeler, and
Olyvia Pugh took two shots apiece. Guillory nearly scored in the 86th minute but UIW's Hannah Alexander was able to deflect the shot for a corner kick.
UIW had 11 shots with only two on target which were both saved by goalkeeper
Aislinn Wright who recorded her third shutout of the year. Louise Coates and Taylor Kish led the Cardinals offense with two shots each.
