Sumar Leslie came up just short of a triple-double as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette, 72-64, at Earl K. Long Gym on Thursday night.
Nicholls (1-1) finished the night shooting 44 percent (26-of-59) from the field and hit eight 3-pointers, led by Babin with four. McCarthy connected on one from long range, making 5-of-9 from the field while coming up two points shy of her career-high. Leslie came within striking distance of a triple-double, scoring 12 points with a career-high nine rebounds and eight assists.
Nicholls enjoyed the advantage for most of the game, and after leading by as much as 12 points in the first half, the Colonels headed into the break up 34-26.
In the second half, Louisiana-Lafayette (0-2) cut the deficit to 39-38 on a 3-pointer at the 16:30 mark, but Babin came right back with her fourth and final three of the ball game. Nicholls would not surrender the lead the rest of the way, helped by 13 second-half points from McCarthy.
The Colonels shot 80 percent (12-of-15) at the line and was even on the boards with ULL at 32 each.
The Ragin' Cajuns had five players score in double figures, led by Megan Whittaker with 12.
The Colonels will make their 2011-12 Stopher debut on Monday, Nov. 21 as they host Alabama State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
