The Colonels will be looking to win its fourth straight game for the first time since '98-99
THIBODAUX – Along with matching its best 10-game start since the 2001-02 campaign, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will also be looking to capture its first four-game winning streak in 13 years as the Colonels host North Texas at Stopher Gym on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Nicholls (5-5) claimed its third consecutive victory last Tuesday as the Colonels defeated Belhaven, 78-60. The Colonels shot a season-high 67 percent from the field and finished the game with nine 3-pointers, their second highest total of the season (12 vs. Oregon).
KK Babin, who was recently named Southland Player of the Week, paced Nicholls with a career-high 27 points. Babin drained six of the Colonels' nine 3-pointers as Nicholls made 9-of-18 from long range.
The Colonel offense, which leads the SLC in field goal (42.9), 3-point (36.9) and free throw (76.6) percentage while ranking second in points per game (67.9), features three of the league's Top 10 scorers.
Sumar Leslie, who scored 19 against Belhaven, heads the team with 15.3 points, followed by
Alisha Allen (14.6) and Babin (14.4).
Similar to last season, the Colonels will face a formidable opponent with their winning streak on the line as North Texas (7-5) is coming off a close loss at No. 24 Texas. In 2010, Nicholls had its three-game streak ended by Tulane, who finished the season with 23 wins. Although North Texas only won five games last season, the Mean Green already have wins over Oregon State and Alabama as well as three against Southland opponents.
While the Colonels have won three straight, the Mean Green will be looking to snap a three-game skid. However, the squads have had one common opponent this season, Alabama, where North Texas defeated the Crimson Tide, 69-63, while Nicholls fell, 72-51, in its season opener.
Like the Colonels, North Texas has three players who average double figures, led by Jasmine Godbolt (13.4). Along with leading the Mean Green in scoring, Godbolt is the team's top rebounder (8.7) and has four double-doubles on the season. Rounding out the leading scorers for North Texas are Tamara Torru (12.4) and Brittany Hudson (10.2).
North Texas leads the all-time series 10-1 and has won the last nine, including a 61-56 victory last season in Denton. The matchup was the first between the two programs since 1995-96.
Tipoff for Tuesday's non-conference matchup is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. A live broadcast will be featured on ThibodauxOnline.com.
