Portia Washington and the Colonels will host Florida A&M at the Houma-Terrabonne Civic Center
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will try to snap a two-game skid on Friday evening at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center as the Colonels open up the Nicholls Basketball doubleheader presented by Rouse's with a non-conference matchup against Florida A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Approximately 30 minutes following the women's game, the men's team will tipoff against Loyola University New Orleans.
Nicholls (2-5) is coming off a loss last Saturday against ULM, and will be looking to capture a victory over the Lady Rattlers in its their first meeting in program history. FAMU (3-4) heads into the contest as winners of two straight after defeating Southern Miss and Bethune-Cookman on the road.
As a team, Nicholls is currently averaging 65.0 points and has connected on an impressive 75.2 percent of its attempts at the free throw line. From behind the 3-point line, the Colonels are shooting at a 34.1 clip, knocking down six per game.
Senior guard
Sumar Leslie continues to lead the Colonels, averaging 15 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Leslie has been the most consistent scorer for Nicholls, reaching double figures in all seven games. Junior forward
Alisha Allen has scored 20-plus in the last two contests to move her average to 13.7 points, while
KK Babin rounds out the scoring leaders with 12.9 per game.
The Colonels will have their hands full as FAMU's Antonia Bennett has been one of the NCAA's best scorers thus far, averaging 18.7 points. Bennett scored 23 points in the Lady Rattlers' last outing against Bethune-Cookman, which was her third 20-point effort of the season. Also pacing FAMU is Qiana Donald (13.3 ppg), Tameka McKelton (11.8) and Kimberly Sparkman (11.0).
