Head coach DoBee Plaisance and the Colonels will be looking for their first win at NSU since 1998
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will play its first road conference game of the season on Wednesday as the Colonels travel upstate to take on Northwestern State. Tipoff against the Lady Demons is scheduled for 7 p.m.
After winning its Southland opener against UT-Arlington on Saturday, Nicholls (8-6, 1-0) will be looking to win for the seventh time in its last eight contests. Nicholls snapped a 15-game skid in the series against UTA and will be trying to end a seven-game streak versus Northwestern State (4-10, 0-1). The last time the Colonels defeated the Lady Demons was in 2008, where Nicholls won 78-64. The 2007-08 season was also the last time Nicholls won back-to-back conference games.
In the Colonels' last outing, Nicholls managed to hold its own on the boards after being outrebounded by only one against a much taller UTA squad.
Alisha Allen led the team with a career-high 17 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season. Allen and
Sumar Leslie, who is second in the SLC in scoring (15.9 ppg), both finished with 23 points for the Colonels in the 78-59 victory. Along with
KK Babin, the trio continues to pace the Colonel offense, scoring a combined 45 points per game.
So far this season, Nicholls has struggled on the road, giving up nearly 70 points per outing, which is 10 more than its average at home. Against the Lady Demons, Nicholls has only one road victory, winning the 1998 season-finale in overtime, 80-76. All-time, Northwestern State holds a 59-5 record against the Colonels.
The Lady Demons come into the matchup at 0-1 in the conference after dropping a two-point decision on the road at Texas State. Like the Colonels, NSU has three players scoring in double figures. Jordi James leads the team at 13.9 ppg, followed by Trudy Armstead (12.1) and Jasmine Upchurch (11.4).
Northwestern State and Nicholls have had three common opponents this season – Alabama, ULM and Florida A&M. Nicholls is 1-2 with a win over FAMU, while NSU is 0-3.
Tipoff at Prather Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
