Colonels Head to McNeese State for Monday Tilt

THIBODAUX  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will play its second game in three day as the Colonels hit the road to take on McNeese State on Monday, Jan. 23. Tipoff at Burton Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Nicholls claimed its 10th victory of the season on Saturday behind 50 points from the senior duo of Sumar Leslie and Jasmine Hoskins, led by Leslie's 34-point career day. Leslie had the first 30-point outing by a Colonel in regulation since Ricshanda Bickham scored 30 almost exactly two years ago (Jan. 20, 2010).

For the second time in the last three matchups, Nicholls (10-8, 3-2) will be facing one of the conference's stingiest defenses as McNeese State (15-4, 5-0) has held opponents to 52.5 points per contest. The Cowgirls are also the only team in the Southland that has yet to suffer a loss in conference play.

While the Cowgirls have four losses on the season, all four have came against some of the best programs in the nation, including No.1 Baylor and No. 14 Texas A&M. McNeese has only one loss at Burton Coliseum this season, coming against LSU in front of a record 4,089 fans.

McNeese is led by Ashlyn Baggett, who is fourth in the Southland with 15.5 points per game. Caitlyn Baggett is next with 13.9 ppg and Kendra Wells is averaging 9.5 points and 9.3 rebounds.

After Leslie's 34-point day, the native of Houma bumped her scoring average up to 16.9, trailing only Texas State's Diamond Ford by 0.5. As a team, Nicholls' season-high of 88 points against Southeastern La. put the Colonels at 67.8 points per game, ranking second in the conference.

The Cowgirls swept the season-series last year to push its winning streak to eight games against the Colonels. The last time Nicholls defeated McNeese was in the 2006-07 campaign, where the Colonels picked up a season sweep.

Tipoff in Lake Charles is set for 7 p.m.
