KK Babin and the Colonels look to claim their fifth victory in Southland play
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to move closer to a berth in postseason play as the Colonels travel to Texas for their next two games, starting with a matchup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night. Tipoff at the American Bank Center is set for 7 p.m.
Nicholls (11-9, 4-3) is coming of a 70-64 victory against Lamar on Saturday, led by a career-high 24 points from sophomore
LiAnn McCarthy. Nicholls had one of its most efficient games on offense this season as the Colonels had four scorers in double figures;
Sumar Leslie (14),
KK Babin (13) and
Alisha Allen (11), and as a team, dished out 18 assists on 26 fields goals.
The Colonels have had no issues scoring at home this season (71.8 ppg), but on the road it has been a different story. Nicholls is averaging only 62.9 points in away games, shooting 37 from the field. However, one persistent component of their offense has been free throw shooting as the Colonels rank seventh in the NCAA at 78 percent.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-14, 2-5) will look to continue its dominance in Texas against the Colonels, sporting a 3-0 home record in the all-time series. After starting the Southland slate at 2-2, the Islanders head into the matchup with a three-game skid after suffering a 69-57 loss at Stephen F. Austin.
The Islanders are led by Myeisha Myles, who is averaging 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds. Running the offense for Corpus Christi is the Southland's leader in assists per game, Verne'qua Taylor (4.7).
In the short history, the Islanders lead the all-time series, 3-2. Each team is undefeated at home, with Nicholls capturing the last two matchups in Thibodaux by three points.
