Colonels’ Streak Halted by UALR, 62-48

Final Stats LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team was held to its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season as the Colonels came up short against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, 62-48, on Wednesday night at the Jack Stephens Center.

Nicholls (7-6), who came into the contest leading the Southland Conference in field goal percentage, made only 31 percent from the floor and never led in the game. The Colonels were able to connect from long range, making 8-of-21 that included five from KK Babin; however, it wasn't enough as their program-best five-game winning streak was snapped as they head into conference play.

Babin led Nicholls (7-6) with 19 points, all coming in the second half. Sumar Leslie added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Alisha Allen chipped in with nine points.

UALR (6-9) used its size advantage to dominate the Colonels inside, doubling the Colonels in points in the paint (24-12) and outrebounding Nicholls, 47-31. Marian Kursh led the Trojans with 18 points and 19 rebounds, while Taylor Gault matched Babin's night with 19 points.

In the first half, Nicholls struggled to put points on the board, getting only two points in the game's first six minutes before Leslie knocked down one of her two 3-pointers on the night, making the score 7-5. Leslie finished the period with 11 points, but the Colonels were held to 22 percent shooting as UALR headed into the break up 25-17.

After going 0-for-3 from behind the arc in the opening stanza, Babin kept the Colonels within striking distance after the intermission, hitting a 3-pointer on two different occasions to put the margin at five points. Nicholls then cut the lead to 31-28 with a steal and a layup from Jenny Nash at the 13:57 mark.

On the next possession, UALR answered with a basket-and-one before scoring another field goal to push its lead back to 36-28. The Trojans continued to keep the Colonels at bay, grabbing its largest lead of the night, 55-39, with less than five minutes remaining.

Trailing by 14, Babin hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Colonels to make it 55-47 with 2:19 remaining. However, UALR ended the threat with another old fashion 3-point play before hitting four free throws down the stretch en route to the 62-48 victory.

The Colonels will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 7) for its Southland Conference opener against Texas-Arlington. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m.
